What conditions does cefixime treat?
Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including bronchitis, gonorrhea, ear infections, throat and tonsil infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, salmonella, and typhoid fever. The medication eliminates bacteria by interfering with cell wall formation. Cefixime is ineffective against viral infections, including the common cold and influenza. It is available in capsule and oral suspension formulations, typically dosed once daily. For children, dosing is weight-based and must be determined by a healthcare provider. Always complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms resolve earlier—discontinuing prematurely can allow bacteria to multiply and cause relapse or worsening infection. Do not adjust your dosage without medical guidance. Inform your doctor if you have allergies to cephalosporin antibiotics (such as cephalexin, cefdinir, or cefadroxil), penicillin antibiotics (such as amoxicillin or Augmentin), or any cefixime ingredients. Also disclose if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. If pregnancy occurs while taking cefixime, contact your healthcare provider immediately. In case of accidental overdose, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or call 911. Store cefixime securely, away from children and pets.
What adverse effects can occur while taking cefixime?
Common side effects of cefixime include diarrhea, heartburn, stomach discomfort, gas, nausea, headache, dizziness, and itching. Women may experience vaginal itching and discharge. Some patients develop allergic reactions such as hives, facial swelling, throat tightness, tongue or lip swelling, eye swelling, or breathing difficulty—these require immediate emergency care. A rare but potentially life-threatening skin reaction can develop, characterized by a red or purple rash, blistering or peeling skin, fever, sore throat, or burning eyes; seek emergency medical attention if these occur. Additionally, severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, intense stomach cramping, or fever during or shortly after treatment may indicate a serious complication and requires immediate medical evaluation. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can develop up to two months post-treatment. This list does not include all possible adverse effects. Consult your doctor before starting cefixime to confirm it is appropriate for your medical situation.
