Refrain from touching, squeezing, or attempting to drain the stye, as such actions risk spreading the infection. Discontinue eye makeup application and remove contact lenses to minimize irritation and reinfection risk.

Dr. Budnick also suggests supportive over-the-counter measures that enhance comfort during healing: "Supportive measures… include artificial tears to keep the surface of the eye well lubricated, an over-the-counter NSAID such as ibuprofen and/or an analgesic such as acetaminophen."

How Chalazion and Stye Treatments Differ

A chalazion shares a similar origin with a stye—a blocked oil gland—but differs significantly in presentation. Chalazia typically develop deeper within the eyelid, produce less pain, and cause more pronounced swelling than styes. While styes often clear within days, chalazia require extended timeframes to develop and heal. Importantly, chalazia rarely involve bacterial infection, unlike styes.
